Beginning individual counselling
What to expect
We begin where you are.

Our first conversation
We will talk about what has brought you here, what feels most pressing and what you hope counselling might offer. You can share at a pace that feels manageable.
If you have questions about my approach or other therapeutic questions you are welcome to ask them. You do not need to prepare a detailed account of the events you have encountered before we meet. I will ask you to tell me about what is bringing you into counselling, and we will go from there.
Finding a focus together
What feels useful may change over time. We might begin with ways to feel more settled in daily life, then make space for grief, confusing and difficult interactions or questions about the future.
Our work can include recognizing your needs, considering boundaries and rebuilding confidence in your own judgment. We can revise your goals as your circumstances change.
Do I attend on my own?
Yes. The counselling offered here is individual work focused on you. Your partner does not need to be seeking support for you to begin. Couples counselling, if you choose, is the place where you and your partner attend together. I support you as you move through your experiences, and many people find individual counselling is supportive whether they decide to pursue couples work or not.
Will I be told whether to stay or leave?
No. I will support you in considering your needs, safety, circumstances and values. The purpose is to help you make informed choices, without directing you toward a particular relationship outcome.
What if the discovery was years ago?
There is no requirement that the discovery be recent. We can begin with the ways its effects are showing up in your life today. Often the pain of old discoveries can stay with us throughout the years.
How long will counselling take?
There is no single timetable that fits everyone. The focus and pace of counselling depend on your needs and the goals we identify together. We can discuss what is helpful and review our work along the way.
